    Our Ethics & The Law

     Ethics: Noun

A complex of moral precepts held or rules of conduct followed by an individual, with respect to rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of motives and ends of such actions.

The definition of “ethics” and what constitutes one person’s ethical and moral stance on a subject differs hugely from one individual to another. What some may find acceptable, others find objectionable, and it’s for this reason that we choose not to describe our products as “ethically sourced”.

The phrase “ethically sourced” is one that appears more and more frequently in the natural history & taxidermy circles as new stores attempt to differentiate themselves. We don’t wish to impose our own ethics and moral views on our suppliers, and therefore we don’t.

We prefer to make our sourcing and acquisition process as transparent as possible so that you, the collector, can make an informed decision about your purchase and ensure that it meets your personal ethical and moral standards.

We believe that this is the most honest means of trading and ensures that all parties (from the suppliers, to The Weird & Wonderful, to our loyal customers and aficionados) understand the full journey that our products undertake and how they reach our store.

    Our mission statement and beliefs:

At The Weird & Wonderful we aim to provide the highest quality of antiques and natural history items to everyone, from all walks of life, with a large focus on education in both collecting and sustainability.

We believe natural history should be used to admire the natural world, as well as help to educate others on animals and creatures of the world. Many people have never seen a buffalo or wildebeest up close but when a taxidermist creates a beautiful piece of work it is almost like you are next to one of these magnificent creatures in the wild.

How We Give Back To the Planet

We support the WWF with monthly donations, buy from reputable dealers and try our best to preserve the natural beauty of animal remains in all forms.

At all times we are respectful of animals in the wild and are thankful for the many wonderful antique items that we can provide and give loving new homes.

Where do your insects come from?

All of our insects are sourced from conservation farming operations worldwide, and then set by our professional entomologist.

These farms enable the preservation of butterflies and insects in their natural habitat as well as helping the local people to earn a living in an ethical manner. This also reduces the need for villagers to sell their land for deforestation as they are able use the natural environment to create an income for their family. We believe that this is most environmentally beneficial way to obtain entomology specimens.

    How We Support Modern Taxidermists:

There are an increasing number of very talented taxidermists appearing across the UK. If you are looking for some exposure for you work we can help you to promote your pieces, find clients and sell your work.

If you are interested in selling your pieces please contact us and we can discuss either purchasing your work, or supplying it on a "sale or return" basis.

    Taxidermy, Antiques & The Law

Taxidermy itself is protected by a strict set of laws, as well as guidelines for how modern pieces can be bought and sold.

This is obvious in the case of endangered animals, such as big cats, but even animals such as owls are protected.

We abide by all the laws that govern taxidermy, buy from reputable establishments and dealers and keep a log book of all taxidermy sold through the website.

If you’re going to buy animal remains in any form, please buy from well-established dealers, or for more information visit www.taxidermylaw.co.uk

The sale of human skulls & bones:

    The law:

Under section 32 of the Human Tissue Act 2004, it is an offence to engage in commercial dealings in bodily material, such as organs or tissue, for the purposes of transplantation. A person guilty of an offence under section 32 is liable to imprisonment for up to a year and/or a fine.

    Issued 15 October 2008

The HT Act is however silent on the sale of bodies, body parts or tissue for other purposes, and such sales are therefore outside the remit of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA).

The remit of the HTA is to regulate the consent and licensing provisions under the Act. Certain activities require appropriate consent to be in place in order for these to lawfully take place, and a number of these activities are also licensable. The HTA’s code of practice on consent sets out guidance on how to follow the consent requirements in the Act.Guidance on licensing requirements is available on this website.

Those involved in the sale or purchase of human bodies, body parts or tissue, and those who may host adverts for such sales (such as internet sites or newspapers), will have their own professional standards to follow. As part of setting and maintaining these professional standards, individuals and organisations intending to advertise, sell or purchase human bodies, body parts or tissue should consider the appropriateness of doing so within these established frameworks. Those involved in the sale or purchase of human bodies, body parts or tissue should ensure that they are aware of the consent and licensing provisions under the HT Act . Those selling or hosting human bodies, body parts or tissue for sale should also reference that purchasers may need to be aware of consent and licensing provisions of the HT Act.

A key principle on which the Act is based is that all bodies, body parts or tissue should be treated with respect and dignity. The HTA considers that the need to maintain dignity and respect is paramount in the handling of all human bodies and tissue.

    ---//---

    What that means for us:

The "sale of body parts for other purposes" means that WE ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED to sell human skulls to collectors for the sole use of being housed in a PRIVATE collection.

These skulls are not allowed to be displayed to the public, without license, and must be treated with respect and dignity.

We sell human skulls and bones for the sole purpose of supplying private collections. They are NOT: display props, educational tools, halloween props.

    Endangered Animals

We do not source or stock pieces from endangered animals.

If you are looking for antique pieces or legally licensed pieces we can recommend reputable dealers.
